Hi CBAers,

The AM CVn campaign - the main effort this month - is going well.  But 
not much data at European longitudes; I hope the Euros will pick up the 
pace for a few weeks.  The star is ideally placed for March-April.

There are two objectives in this campaign.

(1) Timing the phase of the 1028 s orbital signal.  It's always 
invisible in the light curve - just 0.005 mag peak-to-trough - and 
dominated by the 1051 s ("positive") superhump, the 1011 s ("negative") 
superhump, and flickering.  However, because the periods are so short, 
one can average these signals over a long time series - and thus extract 
the phase of the orbital signal.  This is of great interest because the 
slow drift of orbital phase defines the rate of period change - one of 
the great unknowns in the theory of these pure helium stars.  I attach a 
paper we wrote for SAS in 2019; this year, we want to upgrade it into a 
regular journal paper (and we will!).

For this goal, VERY LONG RUNS are highly desirable.  Great for March-April.

(2) For goal (1), the two superhumps are noise - to be overcome! But one 
man's noise is another man's signal.  In theory, as positive superhumps 
drift to longer period, negative superhumps drift to shorter period. 
But this has never been tested.  Only two stars offer the test, because 
only  rise    winterest because The only star which reliably *offers* 
the test is AM CVn, because no other star reliably offers both types of 
superhump.

For this goal, what matters is the total length of the campaign.  We 
should definitely extend it through March-April-May.  But the runs need 
not be particularly long; 2-3 hours is fine after the next 2-3 weeks.

More chat than news, but...

Walt Cooney just sent a very long AM CVn time series.  I wanted to show 
it, to illustrate how I analyze this (and nearly all) data.  The 
original light curve is AM9291WC.TXT.  Plot it up.  You'll see the 8.5 
minute wiggles which made this star so famous back in the 1970s.  Their 
amplitude appears to vary through the night... and it probably does, but 
most of that is due to interference by the other periodic signals, which 
are too weak to see in isolation, but show up in a power spectrum.  The 
main signals are:
525 s = positive (apsidal) superhump (actually a double-humped 1051 s)
1011 s = negatuve (nodal) superhump
1028 s = true orbital period

Then calculate a power spectrum, or periodogram, or whatever 
period-finding gadget you might have available.  PERANSO is a good choice.

The single-night light curve does is not quite long enough to resolve 
the 1028 and 1011 s signals, but combining with adjacent nights makes it 
obvious that these are the basic periods.  In our analysis (read the 
Skillman et al. 1999 paper on AM CVn if you're deeply interested), we 
typically combine data on consecutive nights to get fine frequency 
resolution.

AM9291WC.TXT also shows a slow brightening towards the middle of the 
night, then fading after ~1 a.m. (meridian passage).  This arises from 
differential extinction (AM CVn is a VERY blue star).  The CV is near 
2.0 airmasses at the beginning, 1.0 near meridian passage, and 1.7 as 
the end. If you study this a little, you'll see that the differential 
extinction is about 0.06 mag/airmass.  If we were really diligent 
photometrists, we would carefully measure that and correct for it.  But 
we're not; our typical atmospheric conditions are just not good enough 
to rely on such slow wiggles as being strictly due to airmass.  (This 
was an exceptionally good night - that's why I chose it.)

So my common practice is to subtract the very slow variations which are 
at least in part due to airmass, as well as the mean magnitude.  In that 
way I obtain a "zeroed" light curve (AM9291WCZ.TXT).  +This* (always the 
Z files) is what gets spliced with adjacent nights to get a really 
accurate value of the period.

If you look at the Z file, you'll see a few wiggles that haven't been 
removed.  Are they real, or atmospheric, or what?  Who knows?  Probably 
real; after all, this is a CV (though the least "C" and the least "V" of 
any such star in the sky).  Anyway, these wiggles are small and 
irregular, so they probably won't do much damage.

If you're deeply interested in such things and would like to do the 
analysis, I'll send you a spate of z files, and you can compute away. 
It's very addictive, though.

excellent night from an excellent observer at an excellent site.  The 
technical term for such a thing in the Astrophysical Journal is "a 
typical light curve".

OK, folks, this faint and possibly crowded star is a little beyond our 
reach.  But as an eclipsing AM CVn star, it needs a strong effort.  And 
if it's really in outburst, then the observations get a lot easier!

    Normally at 19 mag.  There is a bright star (SAO61493)
to the north and the brightening needs to be confirmed.

Hi CBAers,

here's a more complete list of stars for (northern) spring and 
(southern) fall.  I mostly leave out IPs since our interest in them is 
constant (but more casual... in that the interest is usually pulse 
timings, rather than really lengthy coverage).

And for all stars, make allowance for the season (of course)!

Southern guys:

Southern ex-novae of high interest: IM Nor, V407 Lup, NR TrA.

Also Nova Sco 1437 (might or might not be that remnant... but a REALLY 

                     interesting light curve).

WX Cen and V617 Sgr (eclipse timings; Josch will likely cover, so these 
are lower prioroity).

V1223 Sgr.  The beat goes on.  A few runs might be enough.

NORTHERN GUYS.
AM CVn.  In 7-10 days, slack off to shorter runs.  The very long runs 
are needed to define the timing of the ORBITAL signal, which is the big 
prize.  The two superhumps are of bigger amplitude, and will be 
well-defined even with shorter runs.

DQ Her. mainly for the 71-second signal.  If you have a cycle time of 25 
seconds or less, you can time this signal (trust me), if you S/N is half 
decent.  But you do need somewhat long runs (3 hrs).  Not too much worry 
about airmass (within reason).

OV Boo.  For the eclipse.  19th mag.  Just a few more would be great.

V1974 Cyg.  A tad early in the season, but keep it in mind.  Another one 
of these of 2 superhumps + orbit guys.

ALL HEMISPHERES.
hp lIB. We'd love to get an AM CVn- style campaign on this one,  Could 
get close to round-the-world coverage.

CI Aql. Another recurrent nova.  Strangely absent from our observing 
lists for years.  Early in season, but put it on your list for April-May.
