I will say, though, that another 2-3 nights of V1974 Cyg (from any longitude) would complete the year's work on it - and secure enough accuracy to pinpoint the orbital wave. V1101 Aql is beautiful and will remain very important for at least another month. And QR And has gone into a very high state, crashing onto our menu for the first time. In the south, Gordon Myers has been covering VZ Scl for some time... and I think it should replace CC Scl as a prime southern target. ES Ceti is also a very timely now... and V1223 Sgr is ready for retirement. Much more detail in a couple days. First class of the semester is tomorrow! joe On 9/1/2014 8:09 PM, Enrique de Miguel wrote: > Jim, > > The main idea with V1974 Cyg was to track the orbital wave, and my partial analysis shows that the light curve is dominated by a common superhump, with the orbital modulation being weaker and not too well defined. The new eclipsing SU UMa-type star, ASASSN-13cx, is a good choice: it's always interesting to characterize an eclipsing system. Bill seems to be taking care of the US coverage tonight. I've got several long runs, and the system seems to show a short-term modulation clearly visible out of the eclipse. It can be flickering, but I'm suspecting this is something else (rotation of the > WD?). V1101 Aquilae. This is maybe the most exciting campaign in our recent history. Kudos to Tomas Gomez, Joe Ulowetz, Marlin Costello, and Doug Slauson for the heavy lifting... and V1101 Aql for flashing these beautiful periodic signals at us. Of course CVs are famous for their periodic signals; but except for the actual orbital period, they fall apart (lose coherence or amplitude) after tens to hundreds to thousands of cycles. The timescale of this decay furnishes some clue to the underlying physics. But when the decay timescale is short and/or when the signal encompasses a *range* of frequencies ("QPOs"), the clues are somewhat ambiguous. The longer a periodic signal hangs in there, the fewer the possibilities for what it could be! Yet V1101 Aql, practically a record-holder in this respect, remains mysterious. The 2013 and 2014 campaigns on this star will be historic - the proof of the "x" syndrome in CVs. We don't yet know what x is... but have a duty to follow it for at least another month to complete the season's work. Especially suitable for the people who have alrady worked on it, since the calibration issues are minimized. (I'm using Tomas Gomez as the primary calibrator, Joe Ulowetz as the secondary - for USA longitudes; in other words, I convert your magnitudes to their scales.) But whatever V1101's underlying secret is, it must be playing out in other stars too. Let's go find 'em! Before we got going, V1101 Aql was a nondescript Z Cam star with surprisingly regular outbursts. Likewise for BK Lyn, which flashed much of the same behavior at us. So let's see if it's a pattern. RX And is a good candidate - plenty bright, just erupted, very well placed now in the night sky. If you want to do some "out of the blue" exploration along these lines, the three categories of stars which may participate in this phenomenon (basically negative superhumps) are SW Sex stars, ER UMa stars, and Z Cams. CBAers famously have long attention spans, and a few back-to-back long nights on any of these stars, even from just one observer, would probably establish yea-or-nay concerning photometric periods. Very ripe for pure exploration. ---- Three stars we're ready to quit for the year are: V1223 Sgr, V1974 Cyg, and CC Scl. Got enough data on all of 'em. ___ Enrique has started a PX And campaign, suggesting three non-orbital signals: the negative and positive superhumps, plus the ~4 day "nodal" signal (thought to be the wobble period, but not known for sure). A sure winner, decently bright (15), transiting near midnight. Time to get going on this star, the first-known of the mysterious "SW Sex" class. And yet another star in Andromeda: QR And. This supersoft binary has just entered its highest-ever luminosity state. Normally I'd say "erupted", but that's not the right word for a star which is always in a very high luminosity state - almost, but not quite, a permanent nova. I've been waiting for something like this - a very high or very low state - and now's the time to pull the trigger. The Porb is awkward (~16 hours), meaning that we need long light curves from well-spaced longitudes; that's why I've never stressed this star before. But I think the 2014 CBA can manage this - and should, right now. Good for small scopes too - about 12th mag I think (but without telescope access, don't trust me on this). Three other stars that Enrique is managing campaigns on: RX2133+51, J0107+4845, and ASASSN-13cx. Enrique, can you make recommendations and priorities for these? SOUTHERN STARS I've spent most of my (analysis) time on northern stars in recent months. The two southern stars we currently have strong campaigns on are VZ Scl, led by Gordon and Berto, and ES Cet. The latter has never erupted - and, according to theory, never will. Telescopes, and for that matter stars, have a way of ignoring theories. So ES Cet is good for occasional look-sees - an occasional several-hour run is what's needed. VZ Scl wants something like the usual CBA coverage - very long, handing off to other longitudes. Berto has apparently enjoyed another great South African observing season, and is vastly more informed than me concerning southern targets. Berto, could you make suggestions to cba-news? I attach the spliced last few nights of V1101 Aql, for a little view of this great star (that wiggle is the superhump, not Porb). The whole light curve is 60 nights. We do want to continue on it - but also search the *rest* of the sky for similar beauties! joe p -------------- next part -------------- 1.38343 15.148 1.38417 15.167 1.38491 15.146 1.38565 15.136 beauties. 14gx just popped off; we don't know anything about it, except "high amplitude", but it shows promise to be a shiny new WZ Sge star (assuming it's actually a CV!). Available to southerly norteamericanos too. ASASSN-14ei has been covered steadily by Berto and Josch for ~5 weeks. The coverage has been good and the star has been sensational (43 minute period - no waiting around!)... but we'd greatly benefit from time-series at the AU-NZ longitudes (=0255-47, so southerners only). Also, lengthy time series at all longitudes would be great; the strong periodic signals have endured for many weeks since the original superoutburst in late July. Amazing how far south Eridanus wanders... and the time series are pretty remarkable too. I think it's about 16th mag now (but lacking a telescope, I'm always a tad behind on such estimates). For the record, we've quit on V1974 Cyg and V1223 Sgr. Two stars I'm about to retire are VZ Scl (nice campaign, plenty of data) and GD 552 = Cep 1 (no clear periodic signal yet). The latter is sort of baffling - we should be able to find that orbital signal (revealed by spectroscopy, so we know where it should be). It's a star of enormous significance - probably the oldest CV in the sky - so anything we learn about it would be great. Davud Cejudo has been observing it from Spain; some long runs by USA observers would greatly help to set a stringent limit on periodic signals - or better yet, find one. joe p -------- Originalid 14.3.174.1; Mon, 8 Sep 2014 02:18:39 -0400 Date: Mon, 8 Sep 2014 02:18:39 -0400 From: Kris Stanek X-X-Sender: kstanek at milkyway.astronomy.osu.edu To: ASASSN M Precedence: list Reply-To: Kris Stanek ASASSN-14gx 23:51:23.96 -30:27:25.2 2014-09-7.19 V>16.7 on 2014-09-06.07, V=15.4 on 2014-09-07.19, V=14.9 on 2014-09-07.36, V=13.8 on 2014-09-08.18 no match in CRTS, only one very faint match in Vizier, j=21.7 ____________________________________________________________ Center for Backyard Astrophysics (CBA) mailing lists https://cbastro.org/communications/mailing-lists/ From jop at astro.columbia.edu Mon Sep 8 08:55:48 2014 From: jop at astro.columbia.edu (Joe Patterson) Date: Mon, 08 Sep 2014 08:55:48 -0400 Subject: (cba:news) ASASSN-14ei info Message-ID: <540DA754.8000107@astro.columbia.edu> For the record, here's the original announcement of this object http://www.astronomerstelegram.org/?read=6340 There's also information at AAVSO on the star. The period during the last week seems to have been 42.9 minutes; but this is likely to depend somewhat on the several outburst states the star seems to possess. Seems to bear a lot of resemblance to CR Boo (our 1997 paper attached)... but much will depend on the *spectrum*, not yet reported. joe p -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Dear CBAers, Two very long campaigns continue to produce great results: 1. V1101 Aql. Now in its 75th day, with only 2 days missing, and most days multi-longitude (Europe + USA). Very, very powerful negative superhump, and very regular dwarf-nova outbursts (about every 16 days). Tomas Gomez and Joe Ulowetz are still the main perpetrators, but there's a lot of help. It has convinced me that the Z Cam stars hold deep secrets! My notes call for "quit after the next rise to maximum" - which just occurred. And there are some very tempting targets still reasonably placed in the evening sky. So my advice is: quit the long time series, but *snapshot* magnitudes will be very useful for the next 2 months (at least). That means V or "CV" magnitudes, not merely differential magnitudes. The idea is to watch the 16-day clock change; it changes - but why? 2. ASASSN-14ei. 60 days and counting, and the light curves are still beautiful. The star is a ~43 minuite binary, and probably should be considered an AM CVn star (helium-dominated CV) until evidence proves otherwise. Like our old friends CR Boo and V803 Cen, it seems to have a big outburst and then numerous smaller/briefer outbursts, the latter sometimes lasting only ~1 day. Spectacular, lengthy coverage from Gordon Myers in Australia, plus Josch's every-night coverage from Chile, and many early-ish nights from Berto in South Africa. All the southern hemisphere's major landmasses chipping in (plus one smaller one: Bob Rea has now joined the party from NZ). Mister 14ei is now announcing itself to the world for the very first time. It seems only fair, and responsible, to keep watching it for as long as the star remains visible to our little scopes. Quien sabe when the next opportunity comes? Maybe never. Keep up the great work! And now for some others. 3. ASASSN-14gx. Another newly-discovered dwarf nova, which flashed a 8-magnitude outburst - pretty much the theoretical limit for a true dwarf-nova outburst. That means the star is super-faint in quiescence - hardly more than a bare white dwarf. That makes it a WZ Sge star, and it has flashed some nice superhumps, as such stars always do. If we knew its *orbital* period, then we could calulate its mass ratio, the most important physics number we can get from these stars. It appears that the early coverage, thanks to CBA and the ASSASSINs, does reveal that period. However, we should continue for about another week, in case of echo outbursts or other surprises. Expires October 1! 4. J0107+48. A newly-discovered SW Sex star, and a deep eclipser. Now virtually our favorite class of CV, and lots of good coverage on th1s guy from Enrique and Jim Jones. To my surprise, the star showed only an orbital signal. It had its chance. Time to quit for 2014. 5. QR And. A minor celebrity, sometimes lauded - though quite incorrectly - as "the only supersoft binary in our Galaxy". It has a 16-hour double-humped orbital light curve, and our campaign, led by Joe U, shows that the orbital period is rapidly changing. Success! This is a signature of the very high mass transfer rate that powers supersoft binaries. Time to quit. 6. RX And. Jumpin' jehosaphats! A year or so ago, motivated by our discoveries re BK Lyn, I started fiddling with the hypothesis that Z Cam stars could show negative superhumps. Theory says no, but theory is... well, just SOOOO 2011. RX And seemed like a good first test case, and we - almost entirely Bob Koff - now have one full cycle of quiescence-to-outburst data. It looks highly probable that RX And has joined the club. Now we need to work hard to evaluate this for sure. The signal is much stronger at quiescence, which the star has just reached (V=14.3). We *urgently* need European coverage, but really need intensive effort from everywhere when the star is quiescent (probably for just 1-2 more days). Also, it would be very helpful to use a V filter on this one, because for the very long period (4.8 hr), we need *long* time series - bringing our old nemesis, differential extinction, into play. 7. V378 Peg and PX And. Having retired QR And and V1101 Aql, which have been monopolizing the evening sky, I'd like to start up on V378 Peg and PX And (actually, Enrique has already started on PX And). Both are negative superhumpers with the "nodal" signal also present. We'd like to see if those signals are actually (perfectly) stable; that would be a major surprise... but the world is full of surprises. 8. CC Scl and BW Scl. The southern objects of choice in the evening sky, in my opinion. I'm not sure if CC Scl is still accessible (because of faintness), but our earlier work this year has certainly established as a "hot object". In the morning sky, ASASSN-14ei for sure, and IM Eri (to start the year's campaign). joe ____________________________________________________________ Center for Backyard Astrophysics (CBA) mailing lists https://cbastro.org/communications/mailing-lists/ From jop at astro.columbia.edu Mon Sep 29 06:37:30 2014 From: jop at astro.columbia.edu (Joe Patterson) Date: Mon, 29 Sep 2014 06:37:30 -0400 Subject: (cba:news) sep-oct 2014 stars Message-ID: <5429366A.7070302@astro.columbia.edu> Two other formats, in case the previous message was unreadable (also, this message is slightly expanded). joe -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed...
