I wanted to sound the bugle on two shiny new superhumpers, though. We (Eve Armstrong and Tyler Harris) managed to get a brief run on Ha 0242-28 ("For" in the Downes catalog)... which confirmed the presence of superhumps, suggested by Berto in his second announcement on this star. We need 1-2 more days for a decent period estimate, and the star is not well-placed... being buffeted by encroaching moonlight and sunlight. But I hope you - especially southerners - can cover this star as long as possible. The only hope, given the bad placement, is to have many longitudes pulling together on this one. The other is SDSS0407-06 = Eri in the Downes catalog. Our data mostly confirm the claim of Ak et al. (2005) announcing a negative superhump. This one's due to Bob Rea and Tom Krajci. But this star is fairly well placed - with the season not too far gone, and nicely astride the celestial equator. So we'd love to get a few more WEEKS of coverage before saying goodbye for the year. These stars, both deep eclipsers, could turn out to be extremely important - because of the extra diagnostics afford by that nice knife-edge cutting across the superhumping light source! Comparing with the eclipse period, the fractional superhump excess is 0.033(3). This is pretty much garden-variety for dwarf novae, and means that we can pronounce the star solved and move on. Had the eruption occurred in mid-season, I'd be singing a different tune - the eclipses could provide a very nice diagnostic. But this late... we just hang on to measure a period, say whew, and escape. Time to get back to the two other evening targets: Eri (SDSS0407-06) and V1193 Ori. The former is a guaranteed winner, with several strong periodic signals - and probably should get the higher priority. Still not quite sure what to make of V1193 Ori... Happy observing! Message-ID: Dear CBAers, Just a quick note about present programs. V1193 Ori has been a total winner, with very powerful (negative) superhumps raging throughout the last 3 weeks (Jennie, Tonny, Greg Bolt, Bart Staels, David Boyd)... and even more so in November, when Alex Liu's data showed the damn thing at 0.38 mag full amplitude! That's a new record for an average amplitude over a long time span (2 weeks). Our data follow this signal quite well, and I think we can fondly wave the star off into the western horizon. A superb job by both the star and its attendant humans. Superhump at 0.1589(2) d and orbit at 0.1658(d) - the latter courtesy of John Thorstensen, Holly Sheets, Fred Ringwald, and the Dartmouth Orbit Police. The other evening star we've been struggling with is SDSS 0407-06 = Eri. This eclipsing star also shows powerful negative superhumps, first founf by Ak et al. (2005). But the star dove into a semi-low state about 12 days ago; it looked like CBA coverage would no longer be productive, although Bob Rea's lightcurves suggested a very large amplitude signal. Anyway, the cba-chatters may have noticed that Tom Krajci found the star back at ~15.5 a few days ago, so I hope we can squeeze out another 10-12 days of coverage while evening moonlight isn't too bad. I've also forwarded this (probably) important IAU Circular. The He II emission makes me think of a supersoft binary - like V Sge - and it may be a good target for small southern scopes. But watch for saturation at V=8.8! By the way, be sure and check the referenced website by Sebastian Otero. This is a very interesting star! This means that following the latter takes more work - and I'd love another 10 days on SDSS0407! Other evening-only targets should be abandoned: AO Psc and FO Aqr. Then there's the newly discovered dwarf nova ASAS0233-something. This has been covered somewhat heroically - in view of the sky position - by Berto and Major Tom. No superhumps yet... and I'm tempted to say forget it, it's just too far west and interferes too much with known winners (namely, Eri). However, if you have a nice western horizon and nice skies and are attracted to long shots... OK, this might be up your alley. Tom's data looks pretty good, and with multiple longitudes we might even be able to find the period. For lesser mortals, I'd say no go. Somewhat later on at night, I always advise quitting on HS0506+77. Coverage by Tonny and Bart Staels suggests that photometry isn't going to yield strong periodic signals. It is, however, time for another few weeks on FS Aur. We're trying to track the 3.4 hr photometric signal over years... and having gotten early season data, we now want to secure late-season "bookend" coverage to establish cycle count over a very long baseline. Good northern target for the next few weeks! And there's a most-of-the-night counterpart in the south, namely T Pyx. We need a couple more weeks coverage to establish a yearly orbital minimum (it's so weak that random flickering dominates the nightly light curves, but averaging brings out the true waveform). The new targets I recommend are: NORTH ONLY. UMa 6 = H0928+50. This is a 10-hour eclipsing binary with no established ephemeris. A few orbits of 2006 coverage will establish its long-term ephemeris - and make a nice little publication for you (I'll send you all our previous data). SOUTH AND NORTH. Hya = RX1050-14. You bet! A tough target (faint star and fairly low amplitude) but it should be doable. We got just enough data last year to suggest that a long program will establish its basic period structure - but not enough to actually succeed. That's left for this year... I'm awfully psyched for this very nearby and probably very old star. SAS has not yet posted full details on their website, but they will very shortly. Here's my version of it, specialized to the CBA subset. The meeting is May 24 and 25 at the Northwoods Resort in Big Bear Lake; these days are full of "contributed papers" - some oral, some poster - with vendor tables, banquet, etc. May 23 contains a few more specialized tutorial-type sessions; see note by Jerry Foote which I'll send in a few minutes. We'll likely have a specialized CBA meeting on the evening of May 24. For those wishing to give presentations, you could choose to give one in that meeting, or to the much larger audience in the May 24-25 daytime sessions. However, the SAS committee chooses the latter, so you have to submit a brief description of the presentation and then be chosen. (Not so for the CBA component, of course.) Some of you may choose to stay 1-2 more days for the Riverside Telescope Makers Expo, as it is now called. Also in Big Bear, this is held at the old site of Camp Uraniborg (as an historical footnote), and is I think the biggest and most spectacular amateur-astronomer gathering in the world. If you've never been to one - believe me, it's unforgettable! If you want to go, you should reserve 1-2 extra nights at the Northwoods Resort (if there's room). I also have an observing run spanning May 19-30 at MDM Observatory (on Kitt Peak near Tucson, AZ). So I'll go out a few days early, rent a car or van in Tucson, drive ~350 miles to Big Bear on May 22 or 23, and drive back on May 27 (leaving some trained observer on Kitt Peak in the interim). It does give me the possibility, maybe, of driving you from the Phoenix or Tucson airports (PHX and TUS) to Big Bear on the 23rd. The more normal and much closer access airports are LAX and ONT. However, these still leave you a few hours away by car or bus from Big Bear. As far as I know, Northwoods Resort doesn't offer any transport. By the way, the Palm Springs airport (PSP) is another possiblity (much smaller). So the various transportation options are a touch murky. Car rental is simple enough, but foreigners might be a little wary of the famous Los Angeles traffic. It's quite possible that some greatly improved transportation advice will be supplied later by SocAstroSci... so don't buy any tickets quite yet. Please write me with any questions you may have. The SAS website is socastrosci.org, and that has links to the Northwoods Resort and the RTMC Expo. This is, by the way, a place of incredible scenic beauty, and I strongly recommend allowing a little time for general tourism. Alas, there's hefty competition in the evening sky: Eri = SDSS0407-06, which I discussed before, and a new CV VERY far over in the west at the end of twilight. That's RX 0023+61, also known as IGR similar-coords. It's a recently identified star which is probably an AM Her star - and which therefore will probably manifest its Porb rather prominently (most AM Hers show a big photometric signal as their accretion columns wheel around). For northern observers, this could be a nice target. The colors are very, very red, so an I filter could be helpful - but unfiltered is probably fine too. Here's the chart and specs (coords in chart) *************************** (clip, clip) The USNO mags are B=18.0, R=16.3, I=15.6 Nestor has the chart. It is star #1 here: http://www.astro.columbia.edu/~jules/IGRJ00234.gif **************************** So that's THREE important stars all competing with each other for precious evening time. Unfortunately. I guess I'd have to consider ASAS0233-10 to have the highest priority; it's in outburst, and it's likely to be a rare one - not many new dwarf novae are discovered at 12th mag (so it probably doesn't visit those brightness levels often). Later in the night, there's T Pyx in the south and UMa 6 in the north (basically an unstudied 10 hr eclipser). And then there's RX1050-14 = Hya, touted in the last message. I take it all back! After looking at two nights of coverage, I see that we won't be able to do this star - it's too faint and the light curve is practically dead. Don't even think about it - unless it erupts. The star I SHOULD have commended is RX1039-05 (= "Sex" in Downes et al). This is probably an AM Her star, but very little is known about it - except that it has a periodic signal of huge amplitude (about 1.6 mag) and very red colors. Despite its faintness, I think you'll be handle this star in dark conditions like we have now. Message-ID: Dear CBAers, Well, this doesn't come along very often... Last night Eve Armstrong managed to squeeze out 2.3 hours of coverage, on the last night of her run, on IGR 0023+61 = RX 0022+61 = "Cas" in the Downes catalogue. The light curve was sensational: gigantic (0.4 mag) strictly periodic pulses with a period of 9.4 min, and a slower variation probably in the range 2-3 hours. Likely to be a shiny new DQ Her star (intermediate polar), although the very red color is odd and may force a shift in tribal allegiance as we learn more. Despite its catalogued faintness (B=18), the star won't actually be very difficult for you, because it's pretty bright (15-16) at R and I where your CCDs are very sensitive. So you should be able to track these remarkable periodic changes in light. Assuming you're of the borealite persuasion! The star is way over in the west at evening twilight... but European [and maybe Canadian too (Gary? Brian?)] should still be able to get long runs, and I hope we can splice 'em and solve the outstanding period issues before the Sun swallows up the star for the year. Our Kitt Peak run is over now... but I fervently hope CBAers will be able to spot and track the expected superhumps in ASAS0233-10. One, it looks like the Japanese (Maehara) found the nascent superhumps last night in ASAS0233-10 (about 12 hours after Tonny's upper limit in Belgium). So......... fire away from all hemispheres and longitudes! Two, Dave Messier and Tom Krajci covered IGR0023+61 pretty well the last two nights - and I THINK the daily aliasing problem (for the spin period) is solved. Still, the star greatly deserves your attention - it has probably the most beautiful light curve you ever saw (huge 9.4 min pulses). In a day or two I hope we can extract the period for the new superhumper! joe
