You might want to take a look at this page on a monthly basis. * Those of you who use older versions of IRAF may have noticed a few problems with header information. If you're using IRAF, you may wish to read the appended message. If you need to upgrade and have difficulty obtaining the entire set of IRAF installation files, please let me know and I'll provide them to you. Jonathan -- IRAF Y2K Compliance The now familiar Year-2000 or "Y2K" problem is a result of many different software packages relying on two-digit representations of the year. This can cause any number of different bugs to appear when the century wraps around on 1 January 2000. There are many potential work-arounds for these bugs, but the only way to completely solve the problem is to modify each software package to understand and use four-digit year representations. NOAO is required to submit quarterly Y2K reports to the NSF and this includes an analysis of IRAF's Y2K status and an implementation plan and schedule for fixing the small number of IRAF routines involved. This web page summarizes the steps being taken to ensure that IRAF is Y2K-compliant, and will be updated periodically as this this effort proceeds. The majority of IRAF tasks will be unaffected by the Y2K problem. This includes most general purpose image processing tools as well as most astronomical reduction chores (flat fielding a CCD doesn't require the date, for instance). Those tasks that rely on the DATE-OBS keyword will need to be modified, however. This includes such areas as data acquisition and astrometry. This is the same DATE-OBS problem that is faced by the FITS standard, since IRAF adopted the FITS keyword for its own use. You can read about the plans for resolving the problem in the FITS standard at: http://www.cv.nrao.edu/fits/documents/proposals/year2000.txt The IRAF plan to support the provisions of this change to the FITS standard has been implemented and is in the process of being released in IRAF v2.11.2 and later patches for the various IRAF platforms. While most IRAF tasks will be unaffected by the Y2K problem and the changes needed for the remaining tasks are well understood, unforeseen IRAF Y2K bugs are always possible, and some are expected in any large software system like IRAF. To assist in detecting and fixing such bugs we have taken the step of setting the clock forward on one of the IRAF workstations by 11 years, and periodically running a suite of IRAF tests on the machine. The 11 year time span was chosen since 2009 is the next year to use the same monthly calendar as 1998 - likewise 2010 will have the same calendar as 1999. This reduces the confusion of using the workstation during day-to-day testing. This testbed computer has been running time-shifted for over half a year with no major problems encountered in either Unix or IRAF. IRAF V2.11.2 was thoroughly tested on this IRAF Y2K testbed prior to its initial release. We encountered and fixed one Y2K-related bug in v2.11.2 (this bug is also found in all older IRAF versions). Further Y2K testing will take place on the Y2K testbed system for any further IRAF patches released during 1999. In addition, NOAO/IRAF will provide technical support including Y2K-related system patches to the IRAF developer community as the need arises. It is the responsibility of the individual projects to assess and address the Y2K compliance of their own layered IRAF software packages. The IRAF V2.11.2 patch was released over the summer for selected platforms. The V2.11.3 patch is currently being prepared and will be released for all supported platforms during fall, 1999. We *somewhat* missed the proverbial boat on QY Per, or more correctly I did, having not equipped my car with a telescope or email. But many of you sprang right into action, and we certainly have a nice dataset which will enable quality measurement of superhump properties. I'd love to receive the data and am psyched to write it up pronto, to prove to my parole board that they didn't make a mistake. Oh, and John Thorstensen wondered if anyone had seen any small objects orbiting around QY Per, possibly pretty far out and in a belt? Seems like a fair question. QY Per, the flying dutchman star, continues. Other salvos are firing off too. IP Peg went up and it would be great to get the last few brief light curves of the year, especially across eclipses. And CW Mon just went off. This is a very little-known star, misunderstood by all I'm afraid, but is a pretty good U Gem clone, with nice grazing eclipses at quiescence. No published light curves in eruption - in fact, quite likely not observed at all in eruption, until *you* manage to get coverage this week. A great year for dwarf novae so far. Let's catch up on targets... QY Per, IP Peg, and CW Mon have all expired as good targets, due to various combinations of faintness, Sun position, outburst fades, etc. CW Mon is good for a few hits over the next month, though. V405 Aur = RX0558+5353 is also a done deal - we have all we need. Two really good targets now are FS Aur and BY Cam. These are the choice morsels for northerners. We need about 3 weeks of close coverage of each. The former is yer basic mystery star. The spectroscopy clearly shows Porb=0.059 d, and the photometry shows a big hump at 0.143 d. What are we ever to do with such a weirdo? For starters, find out if the latter is actually a stable wave, or drifts a bit. BY Cam is a magnetic CV (more or less an AM Her star) with a rotation period slightly discrepant from the orbital. The two periods beat together in ~6 d, so over 3-4 weeks we can get very fine resolution of how the two periodic processes play out in the light curve as their relative phase changes. In the south, it's still CN Ori. No takers so far, but it's in a very long semi-outburst state, and it would be pow'f'l interesting to see what happens to its hump in such a state. This makes it too interesting to pass up! The deep eclipses enable accurate measurement of where the superping light originates in the binary, a piece of information rarely available. So let's go for this star. The position is RA=10 43 57.10, DEC=+58 07 33.3, and it appears to be otherwise known as USNO1425.07642945. At the same time, coverage of BY Cam by Cap'n Bob and Dave East has given great promise, as you'll see from the light curve appended below. Fire away on this star in the evening sky! The best star for australites is definitely CN Ori. Marc Bos has been observing it, and I hope you'll let me know of your observations (even if unreduced) since then I'll try to arrange additional off-longitude coverage, so we can properly decipher the period structure. <200001191521.KAA14420@tristram.phys.columbia.edu> Dear CBAers, 1/19/2000 Well the Takamizawa (V85) dwarf nova is certainly an interesting one. Deep eclipses (1.6 mag last night), big humps, and reasonably bright (14th). Appears to be pretty early in the eruption, giving the possibility of a very well-documented supermax. A far-northern deep-eclipsing dwarf nova reaching a supermax near opposition! Wow, I've been waiting for this a long time (actually, forever). Definitely a star on which to fire all available weaponry. We'll try to cajole some unwary spectroscopists to record the spectroscopic changes, but most of the information is sure to come from the photometric record of the moving humps and the changing eclipse profile (as the superhump source is eclipsed at different orientations). That means you - well, many of you, anyway. Sorry it's so cold outside (I figure southerners aren't reading this), but it's worth it! Jonathan just started a run on the 1.3 m, and we'll keep up with it on nights when we think the same-longitude sites are down (Dave West, Cap'n Bob, Brian Martin). Let me or him know your observing plans so we can avoid duplication (some overlap is desirable for cross-calibration, but not a lot). The total run goes into early February, so we hope to track the star all the way to quiescence. Also, let me know if you'd like to receive the data - we're just getting started but it promises to be a humdinger. Some of you have asked about the status of other collaborations, esp. with the Ouda folks. Personally, I think it would be best to have thorough collaboration between Ouda and CBA - either sharing all data, or assigning all the (pooled) data to one or the other for purposes of writing up the scientific paper. Considering the longitudes, that would *greatly* increase the science returns. I'm optimistic that we will soon reach one of these agreements. But we're not there yet; instead we basically "agree to compete", which brings its own set of benefits and penalties. As far as you're concerned, though, your data is hard-won and you have every right to do whatever you want with it (I'd love to receive it, and so would others I assume; so send it to one, or the other, or both - you needn't worry about getting astronomers' noses out of joint!). I'm about to send something off on DV UMa (mostly quiescence and the 1997 supermax, but with some stuff on the Dec 1999 supermax), so you might want to send along any unsent data you have. Some CBAers have written their own papers too, either by virtue of doing all the analysis and writing, or dominating the data collection on a particular star (in the latter case sometimes I actually write it). Let me know if you'd like all the data for any particular star or stars, you're certainly eligible to become the prime mover on any of these projects. Oh yeah - Jonathan is assembling a page with all current information on people's telescopes/detectors/analysis procedures. Can you supply that information? Takamizawa V85 campaign is going pretty well, despite a long spell of cloudiness in the Southwest. Jonathan just struggles along through (optimistically) cirrus, and Lasse just... well, none of us can quite figure out how Lasse gets such excellent data with a 10" in Denmark, but somehow he does it. In a few days I'll have some prettied-up data on the Takster for anyone interested. And I'm pretty far along now on the DV UMa - *another* deeply-eclipsing and superhumping dwarf nova in Ursa Major! - analysis, mostly from the 1997 eruption. I attach two nights of light curve below. In addition to all the "standard" superhump features, two others emerge: (1) The first 2 nights appear to show a different period, consistent with Porb. (2) The superhump "spectrum" (temporal spectrum) shows more complexity. The dominate frequency is of course w-W, in the usual terminology. In addition to the unsurprising harmonics which merely indicate a nonsinusoidal waveform - 2(w-W) and 4(w-W) - there are also 2w (possibly due to point 1), 3w-2W and 3w-W. With more extensive data, maybe a full splitting of the harmonics would have been seen, as in AM CVn. I hope you can summon the wherewithal to brave these cold winter nights to keep Tak V85 under observation. The embattled southwestern window may be about to shut completely as more storms roll in - so we'd love some help, especially from other longitudes. By the way, we are also "doing" campaigns on BY Cam, FS Aur, CN Ori, and RZ LMi. They're getting a little short-shrifted right now, but we'd love contributions on these stars - and as soon as the meteoric Tak-ster subsides, we'll get seriously back to these tried-and-true performers. This document is available at the MISAO Project Home Page: http://www.info.waseda.ac.jp/muraoka/members/seiichi/misao/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- History of MISAO Project New Variable Star Discoveries 1999 Dec. 27 KenIchi Kadota, Seiichi Yoshida / MISAO Project In 1997 April, Seiichi Yoshida, a graduate student of Waseda University, made a plan to construct a database of enormous astronomical images, set up a framework to discover new celestial objects in the database, and develop a software to discover new celestial objects as a theme of the master thesis. Because of the diffusion of cooled CCD cameras, enormous images came to be yeilded in the world, however, most of the images were not examined for new objects and only little of data in the images were utlized. In order to improve this situation, Yoshida started the MISAO (Multitudinous Image-based Sky-survey and Accumulative Observations) Project, aiming to make use of images in the world for new object discoveries and data acquisition of known objects. In Yoshida's thoughts, image examination must be automated in the MISAO Project to deal with enormous images. So Yoshida started to develop an automated image examination system which detects stars on the images, compares them with data in CD-ROM star catalogs, measures position and magnitude of all stars and picks up candidates of new objects. This is the PIXY (PIXII: Practical Image eXamination and Inner-objects Identification) system. Yoshida spent almost all of year 1997 for development of this software. Some people offered thier images for experiments and Yoshida promoted the development with many trials and errors based on the images. In this period, Yoshida did not investigated the images for new objects because the system was still poor. However, the system came to run roughly well in early 1998. In 1998 March, KenIchi Kadota joined to the MISAO Project and started a collaborated experimental survey and PIXY system improvement. In the early stage, Yoshida and Kadota operated the survey at the Hanadateyama Observatory (Bistar) in Miwa village, Ibaraki, using a CCD camera under Kadota's instruction. However, the survey could be run only in the weekend and the weather was not well, so the survey succeeded only 4 times during 7 months between 1998 March and 1998 September. The about 200 images helped PIXY system improvement, but no new objects were discovered. After 1998 October, Yoshida and Kaodta purchased a CCD camera in conjunction and Kadota started survey around his home in Ageo City, Saitama, with his own instruments. Then the style is established that Kadota takes CCD images and Yoshida examines them by the PIXY system. At that time, hearing the discoveries of new variable stars by Kesao Takamizawa or the discovery of the first new variable star by Katsumi Haseda, survey for new variable stars came to be kept in mind. In the early stage, 35-mm camera lens was used mainly for the survey. After 1999 January, 180-mm camera lens was used to detect fainter stars. But no new objects were discovered by the PIXY system comparing two images of the same area with an interval of about one month, although the ability for discovery of the system was already practical and variable stars or ghost images looking like comets were certainly detected. The framework was set up to create a database of magnitude of detected stars by the PIXY system and compare them with data in new images of the same area automatically. The check of known variable stars was also automated. In 1999 March, Yoshida examined the image of Sakurai's object (V4334 Sgr) taken by Kadota on Mar. 22, 1999 with 18-cm f/5.5 reflector (990-mm focal length), by the PIXY system and discovered a 15-mag new object. The object was not detected on the images of Sakurai's object taken on Feb. 12, 1999 because fainter than 16.4 mag, so the system detected it as a new object. This object was confirmed on Kadota's follow up observation images taken on Mar. 31, 1999. It brightened to 14 mag and did not move. Then Yoshida announced it as the first new variable star of the MISAO Project, MisV0001, on Apr. 3, 1999. Discovery of new variable stars are authorized in public by being published in the GCVS (General Catalog of Variable Stars) after reporting to the Sternberg Astronomical Institute, Moscow University, a consultative committee of the IAU (International Astronomical Union) and the variability was confirmed. However, this style does not function well recently because too many variable stars became to be discovered to be managed by one organization. Therefore, variable star discoverers generally named their own variable stars and publish them in papers independently, and other discoverers and researchers recognize them. In the MISAO Project, the new variable stars are named as MisV (MISAO Variables) and published. After that, some more new variable stars were discovered from the 18-cm reflector images for follow up observation of MisV0001. At the same time, Kadota started survey with 16-cm f/3.3 reflector (530-mm focal length) in 1999 April and some new variable stars were also discovered from the survey images. Those new variable stars were around 12-15 mag. The 16-cm reflector has 1.5 x 1 deg field of view and can catch 16 mag star by 20 sec exposure. The PIXY system detects about 2000 - 7000 stars automatically from one image in the Milky Way. Considering these results, we realized that many new variable stars would be discovered by taking continuous images in the Milky Way with 16-cm or 18-cm reflector. Then the variable star survey style is established that taking images in the Milky Way with 16-cm reflector, having wider field of view. While 8 months between 1999 April and November, Kadota ran survey 30 times and obtained about 3000 images. The surveys were operated in the open field and Kadota carried his instruments from home and assembled them every time. The instruments were not controled by computers, so all works such as taking sight, releasing a shutter, saving image files, etc., are operated by hand. All survey images were examined by Yoshida with the PIXY system. In addition, about 2000 images taken by Kadota with 18-cm reflector of comets and known variable stars were also examined in the same way. The total number of the stars detected by the PIXY system is about 15 million. About 100 image are obtained by one survey and about 400 thousand stars are detected. But in fact, there are two images of the same area in order to reject noises, so the real number of stars is about 200 thousand. The PIXY system compares the detected stars with data obtained from the past images of the same area and select only about 200 candidates of variable stars. Then Yoshida confirms these selected candidates by eye on the images and removes uncertain or blending ones. As a result, about 50 - 100 new variable stars are discovered finally. For perfection, Kadota also checks the images of all new variable stars discovered by Yoshida. This duplicated check style continues all through our variable star survey and suspicious stars are not announced. Because only stars with evident variability easily found by eye on the images are announced, the magnitude range of most of the new variable stars of the MISAO Project are larger than 0.7 mag. Asteroids are also checked. Taichi Kato, Kyoto University, helps us on identification with known variable stars. On the night just ended in Arizona, JD 570.67-571.07, we obtained a 9.6 hour run with the MDM 1.3 m telescope. The star was in rapid decline throughout, fading from V=16.31 to 16.77. There were still periodic waves, but their nature (superhumps? orbital?) is still unknown as they were greatly dissimilar to the waves seen even 1 day earlier. Very deep eclipses (>2 mag deep) occurred throughout, and the light was dominated by a small hot object at the center of the disk. This is likely to be the white dwarf - anyway, it's very small (most of the eclipse drop occurs in 40 seconds!) and very hot (>40000 K if it's actually the white dwarf). How wonderful is this! We've always wanted to measure the effects of the outburst on white dwarf heating. Nature draws a knife-edge across the white-dwarf face every 106 min, and we can accurately isolate the contribution of the white dwarf. Presumably it will cool rapidly at first, then slowly... but who knows, that's why we do the experiment. We've been observing TmzV85 from the start, and are managing to splice together long time-series photometry from our various sites. We'd greatly welcome other observers in our collaboration. TmzV85 will rise again some day, possibly soon, and we conspire on other stars too (at present, BY Cam, CN Ori, and FS Aur). We have had some good weather in AZ, and Jonathan has obtained some wonderful high-speed light curves. The white dwarf seems to have emerged a lot faster than I expected. It's responsible for about *half* the light in the binary, it gets covered and uncovered in just 35 seconds by the knife-edge of the secondary. I append a blow-up of the eclipse; look at the egresses - you can see a clean egress of the white dwarf (first) and then the bright spot (last). So we can measure the brightness of both every time around. O! the joy! (Meriwether Lewis after glimpsing the Pacific.) By the way, this is an intensity scale, which facilitates the identification of components; the star is about 16.7 out of eclipse and 19.5 in. Admittedly very few of you are in position to measure such things, but I couldn't resist. Some of the hump behavior is very strong and could still be measured with small scopes (Tonny has successfully done it), but for most TmzV85 has dropped off their radar screens (or perhaps never appeared). For most of the CBA world, I again commend BY Cam, FS Aur, and CN Ori. RZ LMi is the other appealing target now coming into view - up all night now in Upper Hyperborea. BY Cam is a violent variable and will keep you hopping! Jonathan threatens to revamp the website and set up a nice TmzV85 centerfold. He is very busy with observing now but that should come in about 2 weeks. The VSNET website has many daily updates on the Tak-ster, by the way. Attempts to foment a collaboration with the Ouda people have not been successful, but... well, maybe some day.
