EG Cnc: V = 12.20 @ HJD 2450418.8355 Field stars of possible interest to CCD observers for comparison purposes (positions are my best estimates and are approximate): 2.8' W, 0.3' S : V = 13.86, B-V = 0.66 3.1' W, 0.9' N : V = 15.64, B-V = 0.81 4.0' W, 0.5' N : V = 12.82, B-V = 0.73 EG Cnc is very unfavorably placed for my southern latitude and short nights. I did manage a very short time series on it. All of the above observations were made at sec z > 1.9. I still need to verify my calibration calculations from the standards I observed, but I figure this will give you something to go on. Additionally, some provisional data on comparison stars marked on CBA finding charts: PX And comp 1: V = 13.63, B-V = 0.71 PX And comp 2: V = 14.34, B-V = 0.61 RR Pic comp 1: V = 13.06, B-V = 0.85 RR Pic comp 2: V = 10.92, B-V = 1.08 And, foreseeing a possible spring campaign, V 803 Cen (= AE 1, a helium CV) comparison star roughly 2.2' S, 0.2' E is V = 13.39, B-V = 0.59. I've studied Jonathan's data, and the star's definitely waving. But he can't of course get a period from the south, so this is for the northerners to jump with alacrity on. Lemme know what you get! Better yet, send me the data! And don't forget PX And in the evening sky. Very nice performer, quite a beauty, in the northern sky. At 15.1 but showing quite LARGE superhumps. And for the southerners, RR Pic is showing large-amplitude (0.17 mag) waves at mag 12.5, so it's a great, great target to do, especially now when we are getting long coverage on it from Chile every night. Dave Harvey's observations of PX And are quite gorgeous; I attach a file giving the two dense segments (some European data there too). I beg you to try for coverage over the next 2 weeks, because a dense 2-week observation will sort out the period issues very well. The moon is down and everyone can try this baby. The superhumps, eclipse depths, and mean light levels all appear to be varying with a candidate precession period. But aliasing is problematic as usual from a single site. Help, help. The star is about 15.1 out of eclipse, but the variations are of quite large amplitude, so I think everyone can do it. We have three nights now on EG Cnc, which give a small-amplitude wave at 0.0574+-0.0001 d (82.6 min). This result is from Kemp and Harvey alone; I was hoping for some other contributions before sending it to vsnet. I believe some of you are observing it, and I will wait another day or so with this result. It seems quite plausible that this may be the "outburst orbital hump", sort of the warm-up for real superhumps. I say this because of the analogy to AL Com, and because most real superhumps manage a much bigger amplitude. EG Cnc appears to be another "WZ Sge star", that class of very reluctant dwarf novae. We're awfully interested in these guys, and I hope you unleash your cameras on it as long as it's bright (2 more weeks?). And for the southerners, I heartily commend RR Pic as the star of the month. a new member EG CANCRI, A SHINY NEW WZ SAGITTAE STAR We have obtained time-series photometry of EG Cnc on each night (December 1-5) since Schmeer's exciting recovery of the star after its 19-year slumber. We used data from four stations of the Center for Backyard Astrophysics (CBA), and added brief coverage from the Cerro Tololo 1-m telescope. The star continues a linear decline at 0.12 mag/night, and was at V=12.83 on December 5.3 UT. During December 1-3, the star showed a periodic modulation at 0.0572+-0.0002 d, with ever-decreasing amplitude (averaging .03 mag peak-to-trough). On December 4-5, the signal weakened further and disappeared into the noise. This is reminiscent of AL Com, which had a large outburst in April 1995 after a 20-year quiescence. AL Com showed an "outburst orbital hump" exactly at Porb for the first 5 days, then lost periodic signals for 4 days until the main superhumps (at Porb + 1.1%) appeared suddenly and with large amplitude on day 10. Those superhumps rumbled through the light curve for at least another month. It's still too early to know how extensive the resemblance is. But so far, the outburst of EG Cnc is distinctive for the *smallness* of the photometric waves, and for their rapid disappearance even while the star remains bright. It's tempting to guess that the 82.4 min waves reported here (and by Matsumoto in vsnet-alert 607) aren't the real superhumps, but some sort of "warm-up" for the real thing which is still a few days away. They're really just not sufficiently "super": quite small, and no provable displacement of period from Porb since the latter is completely unknown. I would bet dollars to doughnuts (American phrase; translates well enough, I guess, since dollars are a strong currency) that EG Cnc will grow strong genuine superhumps within a few days. This would offer a great chance to watch the growth of superhumps in real time, which is very rarely possible since there is seldom much warning for these things. At magnitude 12.8 and decently placed in the night sky, the star could provide a historic opportunity for learning the timescale of superhump growth, an important subject poorly constrained by observation or theory. So shrug off that morning frost and get thee to a telescope! And we would be absolutely delighted to hear from observers who manage to obtain any time-series photometry. It's a wild and wet day in New York, the skies are faucets and the streets are rivers, but as usual it's gloriously clear in Chile. And Jonathan just sent me the light curve of EG CNC from last night. Only 1.6 hr long (sorry the dec's a bear), but an extremely respectable wave of about 0.12 mag full amplitude. Definitely a good superhump candidate. Just one though; at the very least, superhumps need to be plural! Has anyone else been oberving in the last day? Or will observe? There's a lotta bad weather over the CBA right now, but in case you have an opportunity, this would be an awfully nice time to cover our new friend in Cancer. * * * * And while I've (maybe) got your attention, I'll review the status of our other campaigns: PX AND = And 1 = PG0027+26. I think this merits the highest priority. We're getting a brief run every night from Chile since I'm nervous about the success of our northern coverage. It's really a lovely target, with large superhumps, eclipses, and a several-day period whispering "wobble". Hope you'll get interested... RR PIC. Australites only of course. This has been our main target from Chile, and it's doing its little humpy thing, along with a several-day wave which will be of great interest to us. We'll keep on it through Feb 1 at least, but earnestly seek help from other longitudes. Still getting a steady stream of data on FY Per and RW Tri from the smaller scopes. Good stuff. By the way, can someone get accurate UBVRI mags on FY Per? There's some doubt about the CV classification. John Thorstensen has a 6-hour spectroscopic ("orbital"?) period, but he describes it as "too good" - lacking the usual noise in CV RVs. An accurate UBVRI measurement can often identify CV imitators. T Pyx and DW UMa have been put on hold for a while - mainly by competition from RR Pic and EG Cnc. However, these stars performed so admirably for us in 1996 that there is no doubt whatever we will observe them extensively a little later in the season. Finally, there are our snapshot patrols. Not our usual thing, but we're doing them for a few stars where the basic pattern of high and low states is still very poorly known. The ones now on our list are AH Eri, PG0911-066 = Hya 1, VZ Pyx = Pyx 2 = H0857-242, DI UMa, HS Vir, and V803 Cen. We won't necessarily pursue these stars seriously, but would like to get snapshot mags to study (or let's say "help study") the eruption history. We were curious about the slight difference between the photometric periods reported by the CBA (0.0572 d) and the one reported from Osaka (0.0582 d). At first we thought it might just be the low amplitude (i.e. confounded by flickers). But we exchanged data, and the merged data set shows obvious signals at 17.46+-0.11 and 33.36+- 0.11 c/d. There are no aliasing worries, since this is really global data (Belgium-Chile-Maryland-Arizona-Osaka). So the two signals appear to be very far from commensurate. Dave Skillman reports that he saw large humps around December 5.4. So it looks like THEY have arrived. Dum-dum-da-dum. Sorry for the slang. That was a drumbeat. I dunno the period yet. The photometric waves in EG Cancri that Taichi Kato sensed as they were passing Pluto (how does he get his information?). During a CBA-Maryland run of six hours centered on December 5.35 UT, the waves were at 0.027 mag and slightly growing. A Cerro Tololo observation on December 6.3 showed that the amplitude had grown to 0.13 mag (at V=13.0), and on December 7.3 it had grown further to 0.18 mag while the star had brightened to V=12.5. The period was probably 0.0606+-0.0002 d, with a chance of really being 0.0645 d, the one-day alias. In either case, quite a bit longer than the period(s) reported a few days earlier. Won't you join us in watching this fascinating little star which is likely to teach us a lot during its four weeks of fame... We don't have much coverage from other longitudes, and I hope this can be remedied as the superhump will become harder to follow later as the star fades. It's worth a special effort since these supermaxima seem to be mighty rare (only known one in history was in 1977). If you would like to receive the current light curve showing the superhumps, let me know - I have it ready to send at the push of a few buttons. PX And = PG0027+260 = And 1 is wonderful; I imagine you're getting tired of reading that but I wanted to plug it again in the hope that we can keep up strong coverage through about January 10. We're quite fond of "comp 1" on the CBA charts, the star 3.5 arcmin north of the variable, and we're awfully happy with unfiltered photometry on typically red-sensitive CCDs. Delighted, in fact. Our southern friends have likely been at the beach too long while we hard-working borealites have been looking at EG Cnc or at least the clouds in front of EG Cnc. But now there's a (likely) superhumper for the other hemisphere. Jonathan Kemp sent me confirmation of CU Vel's outburst, first announced yesterday by Hers in the vs-net. This is another rare erupter, and there has never been a good study of its superhumps. So we will likely start tonight, and earnestly hope that we will have some help from other longitudes. Will we? Please let me know if you think you might be able to get time- series photometry on it -- that knowledge will spur us to greater devotion. The star is presently about 11.3 so does not necessarily require a CCD (in fact, it's possible that the humps may even be visible by eyeball). More items for australites. We demoted RR Pic in our observing plans, because it failed to display a superhump in a ten-night light curve. A serious breach of ethics. Nevertheless, it's quite a good target for small telescopes, and I recommend it as the *best* southern target for people just now getting "on the air". We're spending more time on H0551-819 = Men 1, also a fine target since the star is bright and has an interesting period structure; but it has a companion just 3- 4 arcsec away, so you'll have to decide what to do about that. Large- telescope folks should consider H0709-36 = Pup 1, a great star with eclipses and superhumps; but it's faint (15.5) and in a moderately crowded star field. It finally cleared up in Europe, and we got good runs from Tonny and Lasse. This coupled with continued good stuff from Dave W and Bob is documenting the superhump evolution through the drop pretty well (excellent staying power!) I know the star is tough to do now, around mag 16-16.4, but give it a good try, as the supply is bound to dwindle now and the opportunities don't come often! As most of you know, these stars frequently hit a minimum and then bounce back up, so keep watching after you think the outburst is over. John Thorstensen and Cindy Taylor have promised (well that wasn't the exact word but I take poetic license) to obtain spectroscopy now, so we can find out what the damn orbital period really is. Hold those Xmas cards for these folks until we see if they deliver! PX And continues to delight. Two lovely superhumps, hanging in there with great endurance. Northerners should be able to go for another month. We have the field pretty well calibrated and can easily handle unfiltered time series, especially if you help us by using "comp 1", the V=13.63 star about 3.5 arcmin north of Mister PX. Once EG Cnc vanishes, the choice northern stars are the dwarf novae DI UMa and RZ LMi, which we'd like to cover all the time, not just during eruptions. Faint suckers though. Time to start DW UMa too, a star which I promise will enchant you quite thoroughly! For southerners, Men 1 = H0551-819 and RR Pic (especially the former) are our season-long program stars. However, V803 Cen is now at 12th magnitude and vigorously superhumping. This star will be our #1 priority (southern) in early April when we have scheduled simultaneous time in Chile and South Africa. Bad weather and vacations and bright moon have afflicted us over the past 10 days. Our coverage seems to have slipped although I can't be sure since some of you are in the habit of surprising me with a couple weeks data sent at a time. I watch my box carefully for such tidings of comfort and joy. Most of you know that EG Cnc surged a few times after the main outburst, and indeed it may not be over. Humps remain in the light curve (they might have disappeared for a day or so, but they're generally still there at low amplitude), though we have not lately got the extensive multi-longitude coverage that makes period-finding easy. Let's keep the faith for at least another week. (But probably not for ye of little aperture; the star was 16th mag tonight, and may have disappeared from your menu of feasible targets). There's at least three more weeks of life left in the PX And campaign. Feed me, feed me. It's time to quit on RW Tri. This has been a backup target, mainly for the Europeans. I wanted to do some stars "expected not to show superhumps", because it's always dangerous to tailor your observing program strictly for the most promising stars. I certainly don't think that bias is absent from our work, but I would like to lessen it. RW Tri followed conventional wisdom in failing to superhump even with a sensitive detection limit of ~0.04 mag. A good result, and a damn handsome light curve too. The other backup target we're doing is FY Per. Nice bright star, suitable for bright moon, small telescopes, poor conditions. We should keep going on it through March 1. Now for the main course. The excellent luck we've had with DW UMa (last year) and PX And leads me to place a heavy emphasis on covering all the SW Sex stars. In particular, three of these stars are now swinging into good observing position for northerners: BH Lyn (0822+51), DW UMa (1030+59), and SW Sex (1012-03). It's now time to begin campaigns on each of these stars. I propose that we do an intensive campaign from now through January 16 on BH Lyn. If it superhumps, we'll be wanting to cover it for two more months -- but we want one episode of intense coverage to reach sensitive limits and to unravel the (often) fine details of period structure. A good-looking comp star (V=14.47, B-V=0.76) lurks 1.3 arcmin NW from the variable, and another possible one is 2 arcmin S from the variable. Either is OK, with the former preferred. The variable is in Downes & Shara, with 2000 coords 8 22 36.1 +51 05 24. The time is ripe for starting on DW UMa and SW Sex too. DW is in a very blank field; I recommend a comp star 5 arcmin W and 3 arcmin S from the variable (off the Downes & Shara chart). SW Sex has a really good comp (V=13.19, B-V=0.64) 2.1 arcmin E and 1.2 arcmin N from the variable. I hope that the dwarf novae will let us do these programs! The only dwarf nova I would assign comparable importance to is DI UMa, but that one is probably too faint for the smaller scopes. More on dwarf novae later... but let's get going on the SW Sexers and especially BH Lyn. Oh, such a NORTHERN bias! Well, I'll write again re the southern stars, but the one word summary is: Tafelberg (alias Men 1, alias H 0551-819) We'll do intensive observations of it from Chile during January 2-19, and would dearly love help from other longitudes.
